Snookie, The Situation, and Pauly D

Can someone please, please help me understand what the fascination is with these orange-toned, grammar-impaired, Jersey Shore kids??
In a rare moment that I got to catch some "adult" programming this morning, I flipped on The View. Yes, I realize this may have been my first mistake but let's ignore that for the time being. At first glimpse, I thought that we had made contact with Aliens. I'm not even joking.
As it turns out, Americans have seemingly popularized the 20 something's who are trapped in a time warp from the 90's... and not the good part that gave us Dave Matthews Band, Smashing Pumpkins, and Pearl Jam. No, these individuals (whom I need to keep remind myself are actually -GASP- someone's offspring!!!) are from the part of the 90's that I think we should all be working to forget... the part that left us with Fake 'n Bake tanning, big crunchy hair, and bad make-out music.
Not only is this a reflection on the downturn of television entertainment, but it is also a glimpse into a segment of our culture that should probably be quarantined and possibly sterilized.
They are tacky, crass, and completely narcissistic. And they get an estimataed $10k an episode for being the most ridiculous "characters" in recent history. Seriously? SERIOUSLY??? I'll pause for a moment so you can regain your composure...
Now, some may argue the fact that they are "wise" enough to allow their personalities to be exploited so that they can profit. Unfortunately, however, I don't think this is the case at all. I am pretty certain that their "Friends-esque" strike to make more money was based on greed and inflated egos. They take themselves painfully seriously and seem to be completely unaware of just how out there they really are.
I've honestly never watched an "episode" of the show, but if this is where the future of television, and of our country is headed, I'm leaving. Any takers?
The only "Highly Anticipated" thing that could possibly come out of this marriage between The Jersey Shore and The View is the inevitable SNL parody. Now THAT'S something that might be worth watching.
Oh, and ABC, I would like the last 10 minutes of my life back please. Thanks.
Love, hugs, and blessings,
The Mama

...this is why the only thing on my tv during the day is HGTV or the Food Network :-)
